Yields: Approximately 2 cups Prep time: 15 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 3 ripe avocados

  • 1/2 medium white or red onion, finely chopped

  • 1/2 cup chopped tomato (about 1 medium)

  • 1 jalapeño, seeded and minced (optional)

  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro

  • 2 tablespoons lime juice

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions:

  • Prepare the avocados:

    • Cut the avocados in half lengthwise and remove the pit.

    • Scoop the avocado flesh into a medium bowl.

    • Roughly mash the avocado using a fork to your desired consistency. Some people like it chunky, others prefer it smooth.

  • Add remaining ingredients:

    • Add the chopped onion, tomato, jalapeño (if using), cilantro, lime juice, salt, and pepper to the bowl with the avocado.

  • Mix and adjust:

    • Stir well to combine all the ingredients.

    • Taste and adjust seasonings as needed. You may want to add more lime juice for tanginess, salt for flavor, or jalapeño for heat.

  • Serve and enjoy:

    • Guacamole is best served fresh.

    • You can enjoy it with tortilla chips, as a topping for tacos, burritos, or tostadas, or simply use it as a spread.

Tips:

  • Avocado ripeness: Gently squeeze the avocado. It should yield to gentle pressure but shouldn't feel mushy.

  • Lime juice: Lime juice not only adds flavor but also helps to prevent the guacamole from browning too quickly.

  • Salt: Salt enhances the flavors of all the other ingredients.5 Don't be afraid to use a generous pinch!

  • Storage: To store leftover guacamole, press a piece of plastic wrap directly onto the surface to minimize air exposure.6 Refrigerate for up to 2 days.

Variations: Get creative and add other ingredients like chopped garlic, cumin, diced red bell pepper, or even pomegranate seeds.
