Yields: about 1 pound of bark

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound high-quality chocolate (dark, milk, or semi-sweet), finely chopped

  • 1 cup caramel candies, unwrapped

  • 2 tablespoons heavy cream

  • Optional toppings:

  • Flaky sea salt

  • Chopped nuts (pecans, walnuts, almonds)

  • Dried fruit (cranberries, cherries)

  • Sprinkles

Equipment:

  • 9x13 inch baking sheet

  • Parchment paper

  • Microwave-safe bowls

  • Rubber spatula

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the baking sheet: Line the baking sheet with parchment paper. This will prevent the bark from sticking and make it easy to remove.

  2. Melt the chocolate: Place the chopped chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring after each interval, until the chocolate is melted and smooth. Be careful not to overheat the chocolate, as it can burn.

  3. Melt the caramel: In a separate microwave-safe bowl, combine the caramel candies and heavy cream. Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring after each interval, until the caramel is melted and smooth.

  4. Assemble the bark: Pour the melted chocolate onto the prepared baking sheet and spread it into an even layer. Drizzle the melted caramel over the chocolate layer. Use a toothpick or the tip of a knife to swirl the caramel into the chocolate.

  5. Add toppings: If desired, sprinkle the bark with flaky sea salt, chopped nuts, dried fruit, or sprinkles. Gently press the toppings into the chocolate.

  6. Chill the bark: Place the baking sheet in the refrigerator and chill for at least 1 hour, or until the bark is firm.

  7. Break and serve: Once the bark is firm, remove it from the baking sheet by lifting the parchment paper. Break the bark into pieces and serve.

Tips:

  • For a smoother caramel layer, you can use a double boiler to melt the caramel instead of microwaving it.

  • If you want to add a layer of nuts to the bark, you can spread them on the baking sheet before pouring the melted chocolate.

  • You can customize the toppings to your liking. Some other delicious options include marshmallows, pretzels, and toffee bits.

  • Store the bark in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 weeks.
