Yields: about 1 pound of bark
Ingredients:
1 pound high-quality chocolate (dark, milk, or semi-sweet), finely chopped
1 cup caramel candies, unwrapped
2 tablespoons heavy cream
Optional toppings:
Flaky sea salt
Chopped nuts (pecans, walnuts, almonds)
Dried fruit (cranberries, cherries)
Sprinkles
Equipment:
9x13 inch baking sheet
Parchment paper
Microwave-safe bowls
Rubber spatula
Instructions:
Prepare the baking sheet: Line the baking sheet with parchment paper. This will prevent the bark from sticking and make it easy to remove.
Melt the chocolate: Place the chopped chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring after each interval, until the chocolate is melted and smooth. Be careful not to overheat the chocolate, as it can burn.
Melt the caramel: In a separate microwave-safe bowl, combine the caramel candies and heavy cream. Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring after each interval, until the caramel is melted and smooth.
Assemble the bark: Pour the melted chocolate onto the prepared baking sheet and spread it into an even layer. Drizzle the melted caramel over the chocolate layer. Use a toothpick or the tip of a knife to swirl the caramel into the chocolate.
Add toppings: If desired, sprinkle the bark with flaky sea salt, chopped nuts, dried fruit, or sprinkles. Gently press the toppings into the chocolate.
Chill the bark: Place the baking sheet in the refrigerator and chill for at least 1 hour, or until the bark is firm.
Break and serve: Once the bark is firm, remove it from the baking sheet by lifting the parchment paper. Break the bark into pieces and serve.
Tips:
For a smoother caramel layer, you can use a double boiler to melt the caramel instead of microwaving it.
If you want to add a layer of nuts to the bark, you can spread them on the baking sheet before pouring the melted chocolate.
You can customize the toppings to your liking. Some other delicious options include marshmallows, pretzels, and toffee bits.
Store the bark in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 weeks.
